There comes a time in every woman’s and man’s life where the aging process hits you and you realize you have a huge responsibility. Gone are the days where you can splash your face with some Dove soap and wake up looking as fresh as a daisy. Our environment alone is wreaking havoc on our skin, and I believe that the key to skin care is being preventative.
It definitely takes a while to figure out what products work best on your skin, and those needs do change at least every ten years. It’s a process of trial and error, and it’s extremely important to be educated and mindful about what you are putting into your body and what products you are choosing for your skin.
I got into skincare at an early age and loved playing around with makeup and giving myself mini facials. My mother had the most glowing skin and was an avid Dove user. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for my skin, and, at the age of 26, I started using preventative, anti-aging products and loved learning about new and innovative treatments.
After dropping off some copies of DoteMagazine at JeffreyC. Dawes Plastic & Dermatologic Surgery (JCD) infall of 2017, located in the community of Sundance, I was completely drawn in by their warm and inviting clinic and knowledgeable staff. They offer all sorts of products, procedures, and services for the skin, body, and face, and I had the opportunity to try the new Halo Laser service in February of 2018. My hope was to improve facial fine lines, decrease pore size and texture, and erase some sun damage.
As someone who has literally tried it all, I was open to this kind of procedure, and my questions were all answered after meeting with Nurse Ashley at my consultation.
They say, “When you know better, you do better,” and if I could slap my teenage hand and stopped myself from stepping foot inside a tanning bed, I would. I am much more aware of the sun’s harmful rays and take every precaution now to ensure my skin is well protected. Nurse Ashley explained in detail each step of the Halo Laser, what I could expect from this kind of treatment, and what amazing results to expect after.
The Halo Laser treatment is a fractional ablative laser skin resurfacing. It is one of the most effective cosmetic procedures for improving aging skin. A percentage of the surface is treated, which allows for less down time and quicker recovery. The unique hybrid laser procedure works by delivering two simultaneous wavelengths of light, which removes the outer layers of aged and sun damaged skin.
The Halo Laser treatment costs around $1,500.00 which is definitely a commitment to healthier skin. The results take full effect after about two months, when the collagen produced from removing the damage has had a chance to take full effect. This was the part I was most excited about.
The appointment lasts for two to three hours. It starts with photos of your skin using the Visia Complexion Analysis photography system. This system uses multi-spectral imaging and computer analysis to provide a clear multi-dimensional snap shot of your skin. It captures wrinkles, spots, pores, evenness, UV spots, and bacteria within the pores. It was so interesting to see the effects and damage my skin had endured up until now.
The full treatment takes approximately one to one and a half hours under the laser and is definitely bearable as you lay comfortably in a large reclined chair and have a steady cold stream of air blowing on your face. Once the treatment is complete, Nurse Ashley applied some dreamy SkinCeuticals moisturizers, as you are gifted some incredible aftercare products for the healing and protection of your new skin. I was walked through each product, so I knew exactly how to maximize my results. My drive home was where I experienced the most discomfort. I would rate the pain at a 7/10, and definitely was grateful for full blast air conditioning blowing straight into my face (this was expected and talked about in my consultation). I couldn’t wait to get home to put on the treatment mask.
The heat is crazy initially and feels like a forest fire for your face, I’ve never loved a treatment mask more than in that moment! The healing and downtime after a service like this is about three to five days depending on your skin, and intensity of your treatment. I was able to work from home for those five days and stayed completely out of the sun and didn’t put any make up on. I wanted my skin to breathe and go through the process of sloughing off all the deadness and removing the pigmentation that comes to the surface after a treatment like that
During those healing days I couldn’t help but think about the effects of a forest fire and relate it to what my skin was going through. Similarly, when a fire turns dead plant matter and decay into ash, the nutrients return to the soil and allow for new growth. The new growth and collagen that is produced in a procedure like the HaloLaser treatment, helps remove the damage in order for new skin to regenerate.
I took a photo diary of those five days– I watched as my skin swelled, became hardened and flakey, and eventually sloughed off. What remained underneath was brand new, healthy pink skin. During my post-op appointment two months later, I was back doing photos captured by the Visia and saw a significant improvement in lines, pores, collagen production, and texture.
I love the overall result and where my skin is at today. I have been using a combination of Rodan + Fields, Mario Badesco, and my favourite discovery of SkinCeuticals products and Glo Minerals makeup, which is available through JCD. (I absolutely love that every GloMinerals product in the mineral makeup line is talc-free, paraben-free, and, thankfully, cruelty-free!)
For those looking for a sure fire way to improve the health and overall appearance of your skin, I would highly recommend booking a consultation with the knowledgeable staff at JeffreyC. Dawes Plastic & Dermatologic Surgery. They offer a wealth of knowledge and can make recommendations based on you and your skin’s needs.
Your skin is the first thing people see when they see you, and I definitely believe we can still age gracefully just like the generations before. I make it a rule to not leave the house without major SPF protection, and I am so grateful for the professionals at JCD for walking me through the right care, products, and treatments for optimal skin appearance and health. Maybe, just maybe, there is such a thing as a fountain of youth?
Thank you to Jeffrey C Dawes Plastic & Dermatologic Surgery for the treatment and for providing the clinic photos http://www.beautifulnaturalyou.ca
