Home Decor for the Holidays

We don’t know about you, but the minute the first snow fall hits we make hot cocoa, set the PVR to record any sort of show that has the word ‘holiday’ in the description, and turn on Love Actually. As soon as we’ve seen Billy Mack fit the word Christmas into a beat meant for a single syllable and watched David and Natalie share their first kiss in front of seven middle schools, we know the holidays are officially upon us.

Unsurprisingly, we love this time of year – friends, family, food, cocktails, shopping, decorating, baking… we mean this Julie Andrews style – these are literally a few of our favourite things.  Having said that, the holidays are also the busiest time of year. So, we thought we’d take a minute to lay out some of our favourite (and quickest) décor tips for your holiday gatherings.

Keep it Simple (and economical!)
If we could, we would own the entire Anthropologie Holiday section (if you haven’t peeped at it, don’t walk—but run—to the nearest coffee maker and settle in to take a peek), but the holidays can add up. So, if you’re trying to be spend consciously, start by adding some DIY holiday elements to things you already own.

Poms + Tassels are really fun additions and are some of the easiest DIYs (find tutorials here and here). Adding a pom/tassel garland to your place, or even attaching poms to elements already in your home can help to add a bit of a seasonal pop.

Gifting
Let’s be real – it’s nice to have an extra gift laying around just in case someone stops by unexpectedly with a present and you were slightly unprepared. We love the idea of adding a cozy knit bag (this one’s from Crate and Barrel) to a few wine bottles you don’t mind parting with and styling them on a shelf or table – that way, your gift doubles as décor (and is ready and waiting to head out the door when the time comes!)

Adding Colour (and we don’t mean red + green)
Although tradition calls for red and green everything, adding some non-traditional colours and elements can be a fun and easy way to incorporate the holidays into your already existing interior decor. We love the whimsical feel of the ornaments from Anthropologie (see a few of our faves here and here). We are also big fans of incorporating lighting to set the festive mood and this candle holder from Crate and Barrel is one of our top picks.

We’d love to hear what your top holiday picks (and tricks) are as well! So if you have a bit of time, grab an eggnog, settle in, and send us some of your fave choices – Happy Holidaying!
