What is Galentine’s Day? In the words of Leslie Knope: “Oh, it’s only the best day of the year.”
We love the concept of Galentine’s Day – a day dedicated to celebrating the amazing thing that is friendship. It doesn’t have to be a “valentine’s day protest holiday” either, as some people might think – just a day to recognize our close girlfriends and celebrate how amazing our friendships are.
We’re all about the girl power at YYC Girl Gang – friendships, support groups, and cheering each other on. We think women supporting women is an amazing thing! But we wanted to do more than just celebrate and educate: we wanted to see these amazing female-run businesses in person, and spend money on their awesome products and services. We took Leslie Knope’s beautiful notion of Galentine’s Day, and created a market showcasing female-run* businesses in Calgary. The goal was not only to provide exposure and a sales outlet for these businesses, but to allow them to meet one another, meet their audience, and grow their businesses, while providing an awesome shopping experience.
After a difficult jury and deliberation, we’ve selected 23 incredible artisans for our second annual Galentine’s Day Market, including a Jr. Achievement group from Airdrie, Alberta. You want baked goods? We’ve got Pretty Sweet. Candygrams? Say hello to the Sugar Cube! Artwork? Check out Catfriendo’s stunning papercuts. We’ve strived to select a variety of vendors ranging from children’s clothing, pet accessories, artwork and stationary, to jewelry, accessories, and edibles! Rumour has it, there may also be a surprise performance by a local dance troop…
We were also fortunate enough to have another female-run business, mint + maple, sponsor the event by creating 15 swag bags for the first 15 adult shoppers. This community is kind, generous, and their willingness to give never ceases to amaze us.
We hope that people will come down and buy gifts for their Galentines, or gifts for their Valentines, but most of all we hope that you’ll come down and show your support for the female entrepreneurs in Calgary. We hope that you’ll come say hi, ask about YYC Girl Gang, and get involved with the community!
